On October 3, 1962, the Omega Speedmaster CK 2998 made history as the first Omega in space, worn by astronaut Walter Schirra aboard Sigma 7 during the Mercury program. Omega’s latest tribute to this iconic timepiece brings the CK 2998 into the modern era while preserving the distinctive design of the second-generation Speedmaster.
The 39.7mm case is in polished and brushed stainless steel paired elegantly with a steel, black, or brown leather strap. The black aluminum bezel showcases the famed tachymeter scale, complete with the signature “Dot Over Ninety” detail that enthusiasts revere.
Under the sapphire crystal—designed with a nod to hesalite—the grey-blue dial, CVD-coated to replicate the subtle hues of 1960s CK 2998 models, features luminous “Alpha” hands and a vintage Omega logo. The Speedmaster Anniversary Series First Omega in Space’s chronograph layout is clear and balanced, with subdials for 30 minutes, 12 hours, and running seconds, topped by a white-varnished central seconds hand that adds a dash of modernity.
Flip it over, and you’ll find the Seahorse medallion and engravings that celebrate this model’s pioneering role in space exploration. Inside beats Omega’s Co-Axial Master Chronometer Calibre 3861, a direct descendant of the Calibre 321 worn on NASA missions.
